Montana Caucus Coverage

As I mentioned yesterday, the state GOP's own Energizer Bunny spoke to the Grand Order of Pachyderms at our Friday meeting. And man, that guy talks fast. I wouldn't be surprised of some of the old people couldn't follow everything he said. Of course, I didn't have any problem, but fortunately Rob Chaney of the Missoulian was there to take notes for me.

Montana might make the political radar a month from now if the Republican presidential race keeps producing surprises, state GOP Party Chairman Erik Iverson said Friday."

"Gov. Huckabee's win may be the best thing that could happen for our caucus," Iverson told about 40 members of the Five Valleys Pachyderm Club, meeting for lunch the day after the Iowa caucus.

Lest anyone get the wrong idea, he explained that Huckabee probably won't win New Hampshire, and maybe not even South Carolina or Michigan. So there's a good chance there will be no clear frontrunner a month from now.

"The last thing we wanted was for somebody to run the table. What we want is absolute chaos on Feb. 5, and it looks like that's what we're going to get," Iverson said.
Chaos is good. I like it! He also said he didn't care whose followers were loading up the central committees - they're all welcome. And if their guy loses and they drift away, it'll be his fault and the fault of all the committee chairs.

So, I'm looking forward to this event, though I've had my doubts. I do wish it were an open caucus like the Democrats had in 1984. Anyone could come and vote. Even then, people griped that they didn't want to have to go to a county caucus. Whatever.

But with an open caucus there is no incentive to join central committees. And our committee already has more than a dozen very nice and eager new members, with more are waiting to join at our next meeting. I hope they do stick around after Feb. 5.

So, everyone at Pachyderm left all excited about the approach of our National Importance. I just hope when the regular primary comes around in June that the rest of the Republican voters understand why they can't vote in the presidential race.

UPDATE: Discouraging words on the Wyoming caucus from the local media, namely about the decision to move the caucus up to Jan. 5, for which the RNC is penalizing them half their convention votes:
It never made much sense for Wyoming's Republicans to do this, and it was a clear demonstration of this state's inferiority complex. The party has been acting like the kid who is waiting to be chosen to play ball: "Pick me! Pick me!" Surely everyone has better things to do than this.
Ouch. It's a good thing Montanans don't have an "inferiority complex"!

Here's a thought - Come June when the primaries are held, there will be no reason to vote for a Republican Presidential contender, since they will have already been picked. I am thinking that absent some other interesting primary races, it might be fun to vote in the Democratic one. Could cause some interesting effects if all of the Republicans decided to do so, don't you think?

way to go Steve.. What a great idea. I'll bet we could bother the dark side to no end. Pass it on Carol.

Eric Coobs already said he was going to do that. No thanks.

I'd like to be able to vote on the legislative, OPI & other races. You can't vote on both ballots - it's one or the other.

well if the conservatives don't get any candidates, you may not have a choice
